Comparing the Five Spring Constants
Every spring is matched to a load that stretches it 2 cm: 0.05 N on the 2.5 N/m spring, 0.1 N on 5 N/m, 0.2 N on 10 N/m, 0.3 N on 15 N/m and 0.5 N on 25 N/m. Each pair fits F = kx, since k multiplied by 0.02 m gives the matching force, so a row of springs on one rod shows stiffness side by side. The lightest load, 0.05 N, is the weight of about 5 g.
Why Removing Pre-Stress Matters
A spring wound with its coils pressed together needs a starting force before it opens at all, so its force-extension graph misses the origin. With the pre-stress removed, the graph starts at zero and its gradient gives k directly.
Setting Up on a Stand
Fix a rod to a stand, slip each spring’s ring over it and hang loads from the hook. Set the position indicator at the unloaded point, add the load and read the extension against a scale held beside the spring.
