Taking Strike and Inclination
For strike, the compass is held level with its edge against the rock face along a horizontal line, and the bearing of that line is read from the needle. For inclination, it is turned on its side and laid along the steepest line of the face, at right angles to the strike, and the angle of tilt is read. Together the two readings fix the attitude of a bed or joint, while bearings taken from station to station build up the skeleton of a topographic survey.
