Continuous Contact on the Raschig Rings
Liquid running down the column spreads over the surfaces of the glass rings, while vapour from the reboiler rises through the spaces between them. Vapour and liquid therefore stay in contact over the whole packed height, rather than meeting at separate plates as they do in a tray column. Insulation around the column keeps heat loss low.
From Reboiler to Receiving Tank
Vapour leaving the top of the packing is condensed in the shell and tube condenser by circulating cooling water from the laboratory overhead tank. The automatic divider splits the condensate at the chosen R/D ratio: reflux is fed back over the packing and distillate passes to the receiving tank, while the bottom product is collected in its tank. Samples are analysed on a refractometer supplied by the laboratory.
