What Is the Current Transformer Test Set Used For?

A current transformer steps a large primary current down to a standard secondary current for meters and relays, and no CT does this perfectly: its secondary current differs slightly in size from the nominal ratio (ratio error) and is slightly shifted in time (phase error). The set measures both by running the CT under test and a standard CT on the same primary current and comparing their secondaries.

What is the knee-point voltage of a CT?
It is the point on the magnetising curve where the core starts to saturate, commonly defined as the voltage at which a further 10% rise in secondary voltage needs a 50% rise in exciting current. A protective CT must have a knee point high enough to stay out of saturation at the fault currents its relay has to see.

Why is the phase error shown in minutes?
The angle between the primary and secondary currents of a good CT is very small, so it is quoted in minutes of arc — sixtieths of a degree — rather than in degrees.

What does the null detector do?
It shows when the comparison between the standard and the test CT is balanced. The sensitivity control sets how finely that balance can be read, which matters when the errors are small fractions of a percent.
