What Is the Fibre Optic Voice Trainer Used For?
Speech makes an optical link easy to demonstrate. Sound at the microphone becomes an electrical signal that varies the light from the LED transmitter; the light travels along the PMMA fibre, and the phototransistor turns it back into a varying current that the detector circuit and speaker make audible again. Because nothing but light crosses the fibre, the demonstration also shows why fibre links resist electrical interference picked up along the cable. With a test tone in place of the voice, the same link can be studied by comparing the transmitted and received waveforms and seeing how the LED current setting changes the received signal.
