What Is the Hydraulic Ram Apparatus Used For?
In a hydraulic ram, water runs down the supply pipe and out through the open waste valve until its speed snaps that valve shut. The sudden stop raises the pressure in the valve chamber and drives a small part of the water through the delivery valve to a height above the supply level; the waste valve then reopens and the cycle repeats.

Why is the supply pipe larger than the delivery pipe?
A ram lifts only a small fraction of the water that drives it, so the 50 mm supply pipe carries a much larger flow than the 15 mm delivery line.
What does the non-return valve in the delivery pipe do?
It stops lifted water from running back towards the valve chamber between pulses, so the delivery side holds its head.
How is the efficiency of a hydraulic ram worked out?
From the flows and heads. Rankine’s efficiency, for example, divides the delivered flow multiplied by its lift above the supply level by the waste flow multiplied by the supply head.
