Hydraulic Ram Test Rig (code EL-HLE-8980) is a test rig for a 50 × 15 mm hydraulic ram that lifts water against a delivery head of up to 20 m from a supply head of 2.5 m, discharging about 250 LPH at a 10 m head. How the Ram Lifts Water
Water runs down the drive pipe and escapes through the ram’s waste valve until its speed is high enough to slam the valve shut. The sudden stop creates a water-hammer pressure rise that opens the delivery valve and pushes a small quantity of water up the ½ in delivery pipe; as the pressure wave dies away, the delivery valve closes, the waste valve reopens and the cycle starts again. No outside power drives the ram itself: a large flow falling through a small head lifts a small flow through a large one.
Efficiency and Lift Ratio
With q the useful water delivered, Q the waste water, H the supply head and h the delivery head, both heads measured from the ram, the Rankine efficiency is η = q (h − H) / (Q H), and D’Aubuisson’s form is q h / ((Q + q) H). At the rated 10 m head the ram lifts water four times higher than its 2.5 m supply head; raising the delivery head towards 20 m cuts the delivered flow, and the measuring tank shows by how much.
