Notch Apparatus (code EL-HLE-8954) is a self-contained rig for measuring flow over notches: a 0.5 HP single-phase pump draws from a sump and feeds a notch tank in which replaceable brass notches, one trapezoidal and one rectangular of 100 mm width, are fixed. Welded mesh baffles packed with crusher stones steady the water before it reaches the notch. This brass-notch rig is built by JLab in Ambala, India.

Discharge Laws for the Two Notches
For the rectangular notch of crest width b, the discharge at a head H above the crest is Q = (2/3) Cd b √(2g) H^(3/2), so Q varies as H^(3/2). A trapezoidal notch acts as a rectangular centre plus a triangular (V) part formed by its sloping sides, so its discharge is the rectangular term plus a term in tan(θ/2) √(2g) H^(5/2), with θ the included angle of the sides. For the rectangular notch a plot of log Q against log H is a straight line of slope 3/2, and the ratio of measured to calculated discharge gives Cd.
Why the Stone Baffles Matter
Water arriving in the notch tank from the pump is turbulent. The welded mesh baffles, packed with ¾ in or 1 in crusher stones, break up that turbulence so the approach flow reaches the notch calm, and the head over the crest can be read steadily.
