Wind Tunnel Test Rig (code EL-HLE-8986) is an open-type wind tunnel about 4.2 m long with a 300 x 300 mm test section, 1000 mm long, in which the air reaches 20 m/sec. A five-blade die-cast aluminium fan on a 3 HP, 2880 rpm induction motor moves the air, and a 9:1 contraction feeds the test section. Each open-type tunnel is made by JLab in Ambala, India.

How Air Moves Through an Open-Type Tunnel
An open-type tunnel has no return duct: air is drawn from the room, speeded up through the contraction, passed through the test section and discharged back into the room. A 9:1 contraction ratio means the entry area is nine times the test-section area, so by continuity the air leaves the contraction about nine times faster than it entered, and the acceleration also evens out velocity differences across the stream.
How It Differs From the Open Wind Tunnel Apparatus
The Open Wind Tunnel Apparatus reaches higher air speeds with an axial fan, guide vane and variable-speed drive, and has a two-component force sensor that shows lift and drag digitally. This rig is specified by its tunnel geometry instead: the 300 x 300 x 1000 mm test section, the 9:1 contraction, the overall length of about 4.2 m and a fan motor rated at 440 V and 15 A.
