Plotting the Head, Discharge and Efficiency Curves
A centrifugal pump takes its least power near shut-off, so the test starts with the gate valve almost closed and opens it in steps. At each step the pressure gauge gives the head, the measuring fittings on the tank give the discharge, and the energy meter gives the electrical input; the overall efficiency is ρgQH divided by that input. Head is highest at low flow and falls as the discharge grows, while efficiency climbs to a peak and then drops away.
Comparing the Three Pulley Speeds
Moving the V-belt to another step of the pulley changes the pump speed and gives three sets of readings. Each speed has its own head–discharge curve, and the curves move up and outwards as the speed rises: by the affinity laws, discharge varies with speed, head with its square and power with its cube.
