How a Reaction Turbine Works
In a Francis turbine the water enters the runner from the outside, moving radially inwards, and turns to leave near the axis. Only part of the head is changed into velocity in the guide vanes; the rest is given up as a pressure drop across the runner, which therefore runs full of water. The aerofoil guide vanes set the angle at which the flow meets the runner blades, and turbine efficiency is the rope brake output divided by the hydraulic input ρ g Q H.
Between Pelton and Kaplan
Turbines are compared by specific speed, Ns = N√P / H^(5/4). With its 25 m head and 1800 litres per minute, this rig sits in the middle of the range: a Pelton wheel suits higher heads with smaller flows, and a Kaplan turbine lower heads with larger flows.
