Measuring Output and Efficiency
Water leaves the nozzle as a free jet at a velocity close to √(2gH), and the buckets turn it back to take up its momentum. The hydraulic input is ρ g Q H. The rope brake on the 300 mm cast iron drum loads the shaft: with W and S the tensions on the tight and slack ends of the rope, the brake torque T is (W − S) times the effective drum radius, and the brake power is T ω at shaft speed ω in rad/s. Efficiency is the brake power divided by the hydraulic input.
Characteristic Curves at Constant Head
Tightening the rope brake step by step at a fixed supply head slows the wheel and gives curves of brake power and efficiency against speed. Efficiency peaks when the bucket speed is close to half the jet speed, because the water then leaves the buckets with the least kinetic energy left in it.
Other Turbine and Jet Apparatus
- Pelton Wheel Turbine Test Setup — SS nozzle with spear control and an acrylic window onto the buckets.
- Francis Turbine Test Rig — inward-flow reaction turbine with aerofoil gun metal guide vanes.
- Kaplan Turbine Test Rig — reaction turbine whose input is read by orifice meter and pressure gauge.
- Impact of Jet Apparatus — the jet-on-vane momentum principle behind the buckets.
Turbine and pump rigs are found in Hydrology Lab Equipments, part of Mechanical Engineering Lab Equipment.
