How the Tunnels Are Instrumented
Rapid pressure scanners read many pressure points in quick succession, so the pressure distribution over an airfoil surface can be recorded quickly. Rakes, rows of pressure probes set side by side, are read the same way to map pressure across the stream, and the 3D remote-control mechanisms move the probes to new positions within the test section from outside the tunnel. Force plates and balances measure the wind loads acting on structures placed in the test section.
