How a Rotameter Reads Flow
A rotameter is a variable-area meter: a float rides inside a vertical tapered tube that widens upwards. Flow lifts the float until the annular gap around it is wide enough for the drag and buoyancy on the float to balance its weight. The pressure drop across the float then stays roughly constant, and the float height on the graduated tube gives the flow rate directly. Testing the meter means comparing that reading with a discharge measured independently.
