Reading the Dye Trace
The Reynolds number Re = ρ v D / μ compares inertia with viscous forces, where v is the mean velocity in a tube of bore D and μ the dynamic viscosity of the water. At low flow the dye stays a straight, unbroken thread: the flow is laminar, which in a pipe holds below about Re 2000. As the flow rate is raised the thread wavers and breaks, and above about Re 4000 the dye mixes across the whole bore as the flow turns turbulent. The mean velocity is the discharge Q, timed with the electronic stop watch, divided by the bore area.
Why the Constant Head Tank Matters
The 40 litre constant head tank holds the supply level steady, so the flow in the glass tube does not surge with the pump. The dye trace then reflects the flow regime at that rate alone, and each reading of Re can be repeated.
