Gear Oil Pump Test Rig (code EL-HLE-8981) is a test rig for a 1 HP gear pump with a pair of meshed gears, rated up to 1500 rpm and a head of 5 kg/cm². A DC motor with a DC drive turns the pump, a non-contact digital rpm indicator shows its speed, and oil drawn from a 30 litre supply tank is collected in a 20 litre stainless steel measuring tank. Positive Displacement in a Gear Pump
As the two gears turn, oil is trapped in the spaces between the teeth and the casing and carried round from the suction side to the delivery side, where the meshing teeth squeeze it out. Each revolution therefore delivers a nearly fixed volume, so the ideal discharge is that volume times the speed. The actual discharge is a little less because some oil slips back through the clearances, and the slip grows with delivery pressure; their ratio is the volumetric efficiency. Unlike a centrifugal pump, a gear pump must never run against a closed delivery valve.
Reading Discharge Against Speed
The rise of oil in the 20 litre measuring tank, read on its piezometer tube and scale over a timed interval, gives the actual discharge. Repeating at several speeds set on the DC drive and read on the rpm indicator gives a near-straight line of discharge against speed, whose slope is the delivery per revolution.
