What Is a Banana Plug Used For?
A 4 mm banana plug terminates a test lead so it can be pushed into the 4 mm socket of a binding post on a power supply, multimeter, rheostat or demonstration apparatus. The spring insert presses against the inside of the socket, so the connection stays firm without screwing down a bare wire, and students can rebuild a circuit in seconds. Red and black bodies let a class colour-code circuits — red for the positive side and black for the negative or common side — which reduces wiring mistakes in Ohm’s law practicals in class 10 science and in meter bridge and potentiometer experiments in class 12 physics. Stackable plugs also have a socket at the back, so a second lead can be plugged into the first at the same terminal.
Fit the plugs to flexible stranded wire, check that the insert is clean and springy before each practical, and pull on the plug body rather than the wire when disconnecting.
What to Specify When Ordering
- Type — regular or stackable, or a mix of both.
- Colour split — the number of red and black plugs (the minimum order is 10 units).
- Wire attachment — ask how the wire is fixed to the plug if you will make up your own leads, or choose ready-made banana plug leads instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size of socket does this banana plug fit?
It has a 4 mm pin with an 18 mm long spring insert, so it fits the standard 4 mm sockets and binding posts found on most lab meters, power supplies and teaching apparatus.
What is the difference between the regular and stackable types?
A regular plug simply terminates a lead. A stackable plug has a socket at the back, so another 4 mm plug can be inserted into it and two leads can share one terminal.
Why are the plugs red and black?
The two colours let students mark the positive (red) and negative or common (black) sides of a circuit, which makes circuits easier to check.
What current rating does the plug have?
The listing does not state a current rating. Tell JLab the voltage and current of your experiments when you enquire, and ask for a rating if your specification requires one.
Does JLab also supply ready-made leads?
Yes. Stackable red and black leads with banana plugs at both ends, and banana plug connector leads, are listed separately and linked below.
What is the minimum order and dispatch lead time?
The minimum order is 10 units. Dispatch usually takes 7–10 working days after visual inspection, and export transit time depends on the destination and shipping method.
Who manufactures these banana plugs?
JLab — Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd — makes them at its Ambala works in Haryana, India, and quotes for them directly.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of school laboratory equipment and physics accessories in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. Its banana plugs come from JLab’s own works, not from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers can order the plugs together with the apparatus they connect, each plug is visually inspected before dispatch, and repeat orders are handled by the manufacturer. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Kazakhstan in Central Asia, Iceland in Northern Europe, Mongolia in East Asia, Botswana in Southern Africa and Thailand in Southeast Asia.
Leads and Connectors
- Banana Plug Lead Stackable Red and Black JLab — one red and one black lead with stackable banana plugs at both ends, for 4 mm sockets.
