What Is the Animal Parasites of Man Microslide Used For?
The set brings eight parasites onto one strip so that a class can compare worms, protozoa and an arthropod without preparing slides. The hookworm larva and adult show the two stages of a roundworm whose larvae enter through the skin from contaminated soil and whose adults attach to the wall of the small intestine and feed on blood. The tapeworm scolex shows the hooks and suckers that anchor the worm in the gut, and the tapeworm cyst the larval stage that forms in the tissues of an intermediate host. Trichina worms are roundworm larvae that encyst in muscle and are typically caught from undercooked pork. Trypanosoma gambiense is the protozoan of African sleeping sickness, spread by the tsetse fly; the malarial parasite (Plasmodium) is carried by the female Anopheles mosquito; and tick larvae represent the arachnid external parasites that feed on blood.
These organisms appear in the class 11 animal kingdom chapter (Taenia the tapeworm and Ancylostoma the hookworm) and in the class 12 chapter on human health and disease (malaria and other infections), and the set suits college zoology and parasitology classes and health education on hygiene, safe food and insect-borne disease. A viewer lets several groups study the images at once, and the arrows, callouts and folder questions turn each image into a short exercise.
