What Is the Human Diseases Microslide Used For?

The set gives students one example of each way a disease can arise. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection of the lungs spread through the air; influenza is a virus, so small that its image needs a magnification of 320,000x; amoebic dysentery is caused by a protozoan, Entamoeba histolytica, picked up from contaminated food and water; and the trichina worm is a parasitic roundworm whose larvae lodge in muscle and are typically caught from undercooked pork. Atherosclerosis — fatty plaque narrowing the arteries — is multifactorial, linked with diet, smoking, inactivity and inheritance; sickle cell anaemia is an inherited disorder in which a change in the haemoglobin gene gives sickle-shaped red blood cells; and the normal and blackened lungs contrast healthy tissue with tissue darkened by inhaled smoke or dust.

It supports the class 12 biology chapters on human health and disease and on inheritance (sickle cell anaemia), class 11 work on circulation (atherosclerosis), and college and health education lessons on how diseases are caused and prevented. Microslides are viewed with a Microslide viewer, so several groups can study the images at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which diseases are shown?
Tuberculosis, influenza virus, amoebic dysentery, trichina worm, atherosclerosis and sickle cell anaemia, plus a normal lung beside a blackened lung, at magnifications from 3x to 320,000x.

Is the trichina worm a fungal disease?
No. The trichina worm is a parasitic roundworm. Some descriptions of this set place it under fungal diseases, but that is not correct, so it is listed here as a parasitic worm.

Is a viewer or text folder included?
This listing does not say. Microslides are viewed through a Microslide viewer, which is listed separately; ask us to confirm the frame count and any folder with your quotation.
