What Is the Leaf Microslide Used For?

A leaf section is one of the first things students try to read under a microscope, and it is easy to get lost. This set starts with the whole lilac leaf — a typical dicot leaf — then moves to its working layers: the upper epidermis that protects the leaf, the palisade layer of tall cells packed with chloroplasts where most photosynthesis happens, and the spongy layer with its air spaces, through which gases move to and from the stomata. Close-ups of the epidermis, a stoma and a chloroplast show the structures that control gas exchange and capture light, and the abscission image shows the layer at which a leaf separates when it falls.

It supports class 10 science on photosynthesis and stomata, and class 11 biology on the anatomy of a dicot leaf, photosynthesis and plant growth (abscission), as well as first-year college botany. Using the arrows, callouts and folder questions, students can match each image with a prepared slide or leaf model, which makes it a useful addition to botany lab equipment in schools without enough microscopes for every pair.

What to Specify When Ordering

  • Number of sets — the minimum order is 10 units; one set per viewer lets groups work at the same time.
  • Viewers — add Microslide viewers if needed, as the listing does not say a viewer is included.
  • Practical slides and models — the stomata slide and leaf model below let students compare the photographs with real specimens.
