What Is the Sickle Cell Anemia Model Used For?

Sickle cell anaemia is the standard textbook example of a disorder caused by a single base change. In the gene for the beta globin chain of haemoglobin, the codon GAG becomes GUG, so valine replaces glutamic acid at the sixth position of the chain. When oxygen levels are low the altered haemoglobin clumps into long fibres, and the red cell changes from a flexible biconcave disc into an elongated sickle. Sickled cells are stiff, can block small blood vessels and are broken down early, which causes anaemia.

The condition is an autosomal recessive trait controlled by the alleles HbA and HbS. Only people with two HbS alleles have the disease; carriers with one copy are usually healthy. When both parents are carriers, each child has a one-in-four chance of the disease and a one-in-two chance of being a carrier. Carriers also have some protection against malaria, which is why the allele is common in regions where malaria has been widespread.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a biology teaching-model and lab equipment manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. JLab makes this model at its own works instead of buying from traders, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers order directly from the manufacturer and come back to it for repeat supplies. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Uruguay in South America, Costa Rica in Central America and the Caribbean, Canada in North America, Lithuania in Northern Europe and Namibia in Southern Africa. The JLab lab tenders page has information for tender buyers.
