What Is the Glucose Metabolism Model Used For?
Glucose breakdown starts with glycolysis in the cytoplasm, which splits each glucose molecule into two molecules of pyruvate and yields a little ATP and NADH. With oxygen, pyruvate enters the mitochondria, is converted to acetyl CoA and is oxidised in the Krebs cycle; the electron transport chain then makes most of the ATP. Without oxygen, muscle turns pyruvate into lactic acid and yeast turns it into ethanol and carbon dioxide.
The model also supports the storage side: surplus glucose is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscles, and the liver can make new glucose from lactate, amino acids and glycerol by gluconeogenesis. After a meal, insulin from the pancreas lowers blood glucose by promoting uptake into muscle and fat cells and glycogen synthesis; between meals, glucagon raises it by releasing glucose from liver glycogen. These ideas lead on to the study of diabetes.
