What Is the Glycogen Cycle Model Used For?
Glycogen is a large, branched polymer of glucose and the main storage carbohydrate of animals, held mostly in the liver and skeletal muscle. After a meal, when blood glucose is high, insulin promotes glycogen synthesis: glucose is activated and added to the growing chains by glycogen synthase, while a branching enzyme creates new branches. Between meals or during exercise, glucagon and adrenaline switch the cell to breakdown, and glycogen phosphorylase releases glucose units as glucose phosphate.
What happens next differs by tissue. The liver releases free glucose into the blood to keep blood sugar steady, whereas muscle keeps the glucose for its own glycolysis. Synthesis and breakdown are regulated in opposite directions, so the cell does not build and dismantle glycogen at full speed at once — a point a cycle model makes easy to see.
