What Is the Giardia Life Cycle Model Used For?
Giardia has two stages. The trophozoite is pear-shaped and bilaterally symmetrical, with two nuclei that give it a face-like look, four pairs of flagella and a ventral adhesive disc that clings to the lining of the duodenum and jejunum. The cyst is oval and thick-walled, has four nuclei when mature, and is the infective stage; it can survive for weeks in cold water.
When cysts are swallowed in water, on food or through hand-to-mouth contact, stomach acid and enzymes trigger excystation in the upper small intestine, and each cyst gives rise to two trophozoites that multiply by binary fission on the gut surface. As they move down the bowel they encyst again, and cysts pass in the stool to infect the next host; in diarrhoea, trophozoites may also appear. Heavy infection interferes with fat absorption, causing greasy, foul-smelling stools, bloating and weight loss.
