What Is the Balantidium Coli Life Cycle Model Used For?
Balantidium coli is unusually big for a protozoan parasite of humans. Its oval trophozoite is covered in rows of cilia, takes in food through a mouth-like cytostome at the front end, and carries a large kidney-shaped macronucleus beside a small micronucleus — a good example for lessons on ciliate structure. Pigs are the main reservoir, so infection is commonest where people live or work closely with them.
The cycle is simple and direct. A person swallows cysts in food or water contaminated with faeces; the cysts open in the small intestine, and the trophozoites move on to the large intestine, where they multiply by binary fission and can also conjugate. As they pass down the colon some round up into tough cysts, which leave in the faeces ready to infect a new host. Most infections cause no symptoms, but the trophozoites can invade the colon wall and cause ulcers and dysentery, a picture that resembles amoebic dysentery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not name them. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the stages and labels before ordering.
Which stage of Balantidium coli is infective?
The cyst. Its thick wall lets it survive outside the body, and it is the stage swallowed in contaminated food or water.
Who manufactures this model?
JLab, trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, makes it at its Ambala works in Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of zoology and microbiology teaching aids in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is produced in JLab’s own works and is not bought from a trader, so institutions, dealers and importers receive it factory-direct, with repeat orders handled by the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example the USA in North America, Uruguay in South America, Jordan in the Middle East, Namibia in Southern Africa and Romania in Eastern Europe.
