What Is the Bordetella Pertussis Model Used For?
B. pertussis is a small, strictly aerobic Gram-negative coccobacillus that infects only humans and spreads in droplets from coughing. It clings to the cilia of the cells lining the trachea and bronchi, using adhesins such as filamentous haemagglutinin, and releases toxins: pertussis toxin, which upsets the signalling inside host cells, and tracheal cytotoxin, which kills ciliated cells. With the cilia lost, mucus builds up and hard coughing becomes the only way to clear it.
The illness passes through three stages: a catarrhal stage like a common cold, when the patient is most infectious; a paroxysmal stage of repeated coughing fits, each ending in the high-pitched intake of breath that gives whooping cough its name; and a slow convalescent stage. It is most dangerous for babies too young to be fully vaccinated, and pertussis vaccine is given together with diphtheria and tetanus vaccines (DTP). In the lab the organism is grown on media such as Bordet–Gengou or charcoal blood agar; B. parapertussis causes a milder illness, and B. bronchiseptica is mainly found in animals.
