What Is the Haemophilus influenzae Model Used For?
It introduces a bacterium with unusual growth needs. H. influenzae is a tiny, often pleomorphic Gram-negative coccobacillus whose genus name means “blood-loving”: in culture it needs two factors from blood, X factor (haemin) and V factor (NAD). It therefore grows on chocolate agar, and on blood agar it forms small “satellite” colonies around Staphylococcus aureus, which releases V factor.
Capsulated type b strains (Hib) can invade the bloodstream and cause meningitis, epiglottitis, pneumonia and septicaemia, mainly in young children, which is why Hib conjugate vaccine appears in many childhood immunisation schedules. Strains without a capsule cause ear and sinus infections and chest infections in adults with lung disease. The class 12 NCERT chapter on human health and disease names H. influenzae, with Streptococcus pneumoniae, as a cause of pneumonia. Other species include H. parainfluenzae, which needs only V factor, and H. ducreyi, the cause of chancroid.
