What Is the Wuchereria Life Cycle Model Used For?
The adult worms, thread-like and coiled, live for years in human lymph vessels and nodes. Fertilised females release sheathed microfilariae that circulate in the blood; in India they appear in the peripheral blood mainly at night, which is why blood for diagnosis is drawn after dark. A feeding mosquito — in India chiefly Culex quinquefasciatus — takes them up with its blood meal.
Inside the mosquito the microfilariae shed their sheath, cross the stomach wall and moult twice in the thoracic muscles to become infective third-stage larvae. These gather in the proboscis and enter the skin through the bite wound at a later feed, then reach the lymphatics and mature. Because the larvae develop but do not multiply in the mosquito, heavy infection builds only through many bites over years. Damaged lymphatics can lead to lymphoedema, hydrocele and, in time, elephantiasis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not describe the stages, labels or size, so ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.
How does Wuchereria differ from Brugia malayi?
Both cause lymphatic filariasis. Brugia malayi is carried in India mainly by Mansonia mosquitoes, and its microfilariae have nuclei running to the tip of the tail, whereas the tail tip of a Wuchereria microfilaria is free of nuclei.
Who manufactures this model?
JLab makes it at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
