What Is the Biological Molecules Model Used For?
Most large biological molecules are polymers built from small repeating units. Monosaccharides join through glycosidic bonds to form polysaccharides such as starch; amino acids join through peptide bonds to form proteins; and nucleotides join through phosphodiester bonds to form the nucleic acids DNA and RNA. Lipids are the exception: fats are made from glycerol and fatty acids linked by ester bonds and are not true polymers. Each link forms by condensation, releasing water, and is broken again by hydrolysis during digestion.
