What Is the Imperforate Hymen Model Used For?
An imperforate hymen closes the vaginal opening completely. It is occasionally spotted in a newborn or infant as a bulge caused by retained mucus (mucocolpos), but it is more often found around puberty. Menstrual blood then has no way out and collects behind the membrane (haematocolpos), so the girl has no periods — primary amenorrhoea — despite other signs of puberty, together with cyclical lower abdominal pain and sometimes difficulty passing urine. On examination a tense, bulging, bluish membrane may be seen at the vaginal opening.
Treatment is a minor operation to open the membrane and drain the trapped blood. Because the symptoms can look like other causes of abdominal pain or urinary retention, the condition is taught in gynaecology, paediatrics and emergency medicine as well as in the anatomy of hymen variants in forensic medicine. The model is used in medical colleges and in nursing and midwifery courses alongside models of the normal forms, such as the annular, cribriform and septate hymen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an imperforate hymen?
A congenital condition in which the hymen has no opening, so it completely blocks the vaginal outlet.
How does it usually come to light?
Most often around puberty, as absent periods with recurring lower abdominal pain, because menstrual blood collects behind the closed membrane.
Who makes the imperforate hymen model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of medical teaching models and biology lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and situated on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This model is made in JLab's own works rather than bought from a trader, so medical and nursing colleges, dealers and importers order from the manufacturer, and each unit is visually inspected before it is packed. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Gabon in Central Africa, Canada in North America, Sudan in North Africa, North Macedonia in Southern Europe and Belgium in Western Europe.
