What Is the Annular Hymen Model Used For?
The word annular comes from the Latin for ring, and the annular form — tissue encircling a central opening — is one of the common normal shapes of the hymen. Others include the crescentic (semilunar) form, the cribriform hymen with several small openings and the septate hymen with a band dividing the opening, while an imperforate hymen with no opening is a congenital anomaly. After puberty, oestrogen makes the tissue thicker, more elastic and more folded, so the same person's hymen also looks different at different ages.
That variation is the central teaching point. Because the shape, thickness and size of the opening differ so much between individuals, the hymen cannot reveal whether someone has had sexual intercourse, and international health bodies, including the World Health Organization, describe so-called virginity examinations as unscientific.
