What Is the Culex Life Cycle Model Used For?
Like all mosquitoes, Culex passes through egg, larva, pupa and adult, and the first three stages live in water. The female glues her eggs together into a floating raft on still water; Culex quinquefasciatus often chooses polluted water such as drains, cesspits and septic tanks. The larva hangs head-down at an angle from the surface, breathing through a long siphon at its tail and feeding on organic particles as it moults through four instars. The comma-shaped pupa does not feed and breathes through small trumpets until the adult emerges.
Teachers use the model to show complete metamorphosis and to explain control measures — covering and cleaning drains, spreading a thin oil film that blocks the breathing siphon, and stocking larva-eating fish.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does each stage of the Culex life cycle live?
Eggs, larvae and pupae develop in still or polluted water; only the adult leaves the water.
How do Culex eggs differ from Anopheles eggs?
Culex lays its eggs stuck together in rafts, whereas Anopheles lays them singly, each with a pair of floats.
Why does an oil film on water kill Culex larvae?
The larvae and pupae must reach the surface to breathe through the siphon and trumpets; a thin oil layer blocks them, so they suffocate.
Who makes the model, and are its dimensions given?
JLab makes it in Ambala, India. Dimensions and material are not listed and are confirmed with the quotation.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, an Indian manufacturer of laboratory equipment and zoology models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is produced at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so schools, colleges, dealers and importers buy it direct from the maker, and each piece is inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Indonesia in Southeast Asia, Moldova in Eastern Europe, the Maldives in South Asia, Tanzania in East Africa and Egypt in North Africa are among the examples. Tender buyers can refer to the JLab lab tenders page.
