What Is the Small Pox Scab Model Used For?
A smallpox lesion passed through a fixed sequence: a flat spot, a raised bump, a fluid-filled blister and then a firm pustule. Around the second week of the rash the pustules crusted over into scabs, which later fell off and often left deep, pitted scars, especially on the face. The scabs still carried live virus, so a patient was regarded as infectious until every scab had separated, a key point in lessons on isolation.
The scab stage also has a place in medical history. Before vaccination, many societies, including in India, practised variolation: deliberately inoculating healthy people with material from pustules or dried scabs to cause a milder infection. Edward Jenner’s safer cowpox vaccine replaced it, and vaccination eventually eradicated smallpox.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the scab stage of smallpox?
The final stage of each lesion, when the pustule dried into a crust, usually from about the second week of the rash, before falling off and leaving a scar.
Were smallpox scabs infectious?
Yes. They contained live virus, so patients stayed in isolation until all scabs had separated.
How does it differ from the Small Pox Pustules Model?
By name, the pustules model shows the stage before crusting, and this model the scabs that followed.
Who manufactures it?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, is an Indian manufacturer of teaching models and laboratory equipment, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road in Ambala, Haryana. The scab model is produced at JLab’s own works rather than purchased from a trader, so institutions, resellers and importers buy direct and every piece gets a visual check before packing. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Taiwan in East Asia, Egypt in North Africa, Zambia in East Africa, the Maldives in South Asia and DR Congo in Central Africa. Tender information is on the JLab lab tenders page.
