What Is the Chlamydia Cycle Model Used For?
The cycle begins with the elementary body, a small, tough, metabolically inactive particle that survives outside cells and is the infectious form. It attaches to a host cell, usually an epithelial cell, and is taken in by endocytosis into a membrane-bound sac called an inclusion, which avoids fusing with the cell’s lysosomes. Inside, it changes into a larger reticulate body, which is metabolically active, cannot infect other cells and divides repeatedly by binary fission, drawing energy and nutrients from the host.
As the inclusion fills, reticulate bodies turn back into elementary bodies, which are released when the host cell bursts or the inclusion is pushed out, ready to infect new cells; the full cycle takes two to three days. This intracellular way of life explains why chlamydiae were once mistaken for viruses and why they cannot be grown on ordinary culture media, so laboratories grow them in cell culture such as McCoy cells.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing names the reproduction cycle but does not list the stages, parts or labels shown. Ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.
What is the difference between an elementary body and a reticulate body?
The elementary body is small, rigid and infectious but does not divide. The reticulate body is larger and more fragile, divides inside the inclusion and cannot infect a new cell.
Who manufactures this model?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, at its works in Ambala, Haryana.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of biology lab equipment and cell-biology and microbiology models in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is made at JLab’s own works, not bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers order it factory-direct. Its corporate identity number is CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123, and it holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 as a manufacturing enterprise. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Indonesia in Southeast Asia, Hong Kong in East Asia, Oman in the Middle East, Sri Lanka in South Asia and Mauritius in East Africa.
