What Is the Malarial Parasites of Man Model Used For?
Malaria is caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium and spread by the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. Four species are traditionally taught as the malarial parasites of man — P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale and P. malariae — and P. knowlesi, a monkey parasite, also infects people in parts of Southeast Asia. The model fits the human health and disease chapter of class 12 biology and college parasitology courses.
In people, sporozoites first multiply in liver cells, then invade red blood cells and pass through ring, trophozoite and schizont stages; each burst of red cells releases merozoites and the toxic pigment haemozoin, bringing on chills and fever. Some merozoites become gametocytes, which a feeding mosquito takes up, so the sexual cycle continues in its gut. P. vivax and P. ovale can stay dormant in the liver and cause relapses, while P. falciparum causes the most severe disease.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which species and stages does the model show?
The listing gives the subject but not the species, stages or labels. Ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.
How are the human malaria parasites told apart?
On Giemsa-stained blood smears: P. falciparum shows small rings, often several in one red cell, and banana-shaped gametocytes; P. vivax enlarges the red cell; P. malariae forms band-shaped trophozoites; and P. ovale leaves oval red cells with ragged edges.
