What Is the Claw Hands in Leprosy Model Used For?

Leprosy (Hansen’s disease) is caused by Mycobacterium leprae and attacks the peripheral nerves as well as the skin. When the ulnar nerve is damaged, the small muscles of the hand weaken: the ring and little fingers bend at their middle and end joints while the knuckle joints over-extend, giving the typical claw. If the median nerve is also affected, all the fingers can claw. Loss of feeling then lets burns and cuts go unnoticed, and repeated injury and infection — not the bacteria themselves — slowly shorten the fingers.

The model helps teachers link nerve damage to disability and explain why nerve function is checked at every visit. It is for study only, not for examining patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does leprosy cause claw hand?
The infection inflames and damages the ulnar and sometimes the median nerve, paralysing the small hand muscles that normally balance the long finger tendons, so the fingers curl.

Can the deformity be prevented or corrected?
Early diagnosis, multidrug therapy and prompt treatment of nerve inflammation can prevent it. Established claw hand is managed with physiotherapy, splints and, in suitable cases, tendon-transfer surgery.

Is leprosy curable?
Yes. Multidrug therapy cures the infection, although nerve damage that has already occurred may remain.

Who makes the model, and what are its dimensions?
JLab manufactures it in Ambala, Haryana. The listing does not give dimensions or material, so they are confirmed with the quotation.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer in India of laboratory equipment and medical teaching models, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. This leprosy model is made in JLab’s own works, not obtained from a trader, so medical colleges, training centres, dealers and importers buy it factory-direct, and every piece is inspected before dispatch. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — Afghanistan in South Asia, Sweden in Northern Europe, Mauritius in East Africa, Barbados in Central America and the Caribbean and Uzbekistan in Central Asia, to name a few. Tender buyers can visit the JLab lab tenders page.
