What Is the Mycobacterium Species Model Used For?

Mycobacteria are non-motile rods with a thick, waxy cell wall rich in mycolic acids. The wax resists ordinary stains, but once hot carbol fuchsin has entered, acid-alcohol cannot wash it out, so they are called acid-fast; in the Ziehl–Neelsen stain they appear as red rods on a blue background. The same wall helps them survive inside macrophages and resist many disinfectants.

Lecturers usually sort the genus into three groups. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex includes M. tuberculosis, spread in airborne droplets, and M. bovis, the cattle bacillus from which the BCG vaccine strain was developed. M. leprae causes leprosy, damaging the skin and peripheral nerves, and cannot be grown on laboratory media. The non-tuberculous or atypical mycobacteria, such as the M. avium complex and M. marinum, live in soil and water and cause lung, lymph-node and skin infections, often in people with weakened immunity. M. tuberculosis is grown on Löwenstein–Jensen medium and takes weeks to form colonies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Mycobacterium model show?
The species of the genus Mycobacterium, as its title states. The listing does not describe the parts, labels, size or material, so ask JLab for a description and photo with your quotation.

How does it differ from the T.B. Infection Model?
The T.B. Infection Model concentrates on tuberculosis and how the infection progresses to active disease, while this model’s title covers the genus as a whole. Ask JLab to confirm what each shows if you plan to buy both.

Which stain is used to see mycobacteria?
The Ziehl–Neelsen acid-fast stain. Laboratories use it to look for tuberculosis bacilli in sputum and leprosy bacilli in skin smears.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of microbiology lab equipment and biology teaching models in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is made at JLab’s own works rather than bought from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers order factory-direct. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example South Africa in Southern Africa, Guatemala in Central America and the Caribbean, Tunisia in North Africa, Kazakhstan in Central Asia and Madagascar in East Africa.
