What Is the T.B. Infection Model Used For?

For classification, it supports teaching on mycobacteria — slow-growing aerobic rods whose waxy, mycolic-acid-rich cell wall makes them acid-fast. Teaching schemes separate the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (including M. tuberculosis and M. bovis), Mycobacterium leprae, the cause of leprosy, and the non-tuberculous mycobacteria, which Runyon grouped by growth rate and pigment. M. tuberculosis takes weeks to form colonies on Löwenstein–Jensen medium.

For the infection itself, TB spreads through the air when a person with active lung disease coughs out tiny droplets. Inhaled bacilli reach the alveoli and are engulfed by macrophages, inside which they can survive. In most people the immune response walls them off in granulomas, or tubercles, with a cheesy caseous centre; the first lung lesion and the infected lymph node at the lung root form the Ghon complex. The infection may then stay latent for years. When immunity weakens — through HIV infection, diabetes or malnutrition, for example — it can reactivate as active TB, often with cavities in the upper lungs, cough, fever, night sweats and weight loss, or spread through the blood as miliary TB.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which stages does the model show?
The original listing names Mycobacterium classification, T.B. and the progression of active infection, but not the exact stages, parts or labels. Ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.

Why are mycobacteria called acid-fast?
Their waxy cell wall holds the carbol fuchsin dye of the Ziehl–Neelsen stain even when washed with acid-alcohol, so they appear as red rods against a blue background.

Who manufactures the T.B. Infection Model?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana.

OEM Manufacturer

JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a biology lab equipment and pathology-model manufacturer in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It builds this model at its own works rather than buying from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers deal with the maker. JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example Malaysia in Southeast Asia, Tajikistan in Central Asia, Japan in East Asia, Libya in North Africa and Ivory Coast in West Africa.
