What Is the Enterobius Life Cycle Model Used For?
Adult pinworms are small white worms that live in the caecum and nearby parts of the bowel, and people are their only host. At night the pregnant female crawls out of the anus and lays her eggs on the surrounding skin, causing intense itching. The eggs, flattened on one side, become infective within hours, so scratching carries them on fingers and under nails back to the mouth, and they also spread on bedding, clothing and household dust.
Swallowed eggs hatch in the small intestine and the larvae mature as they move down to the large intestine, completing a direct cycle with no intermediate host and no soil stage. Pinworm is common among school-age children and spreads easily within families and hostels, which makes the model useful for hygiene lessons on hand-washing, short nails and washing bed linen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not name them. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the stages and labels before ordering.
How is pinworm infection diagnosed?
By the adhesive tape test: sticky tape is pressed on the skin around the anus first thing in the morning and examined for eggs under the microscope, because the eggs are laid on the skin rather than passed in the stool.
How is its life cycle different from the whipworm?
Whipworm eggs must mature in soil for weeks, while pinworm eggs are infective within hours on the skin, so pinworm can reinfect the same person directly.
