What Is the Trichuris Life Cycle Model Used For?
The whipworm takes its name from its shape: a long, thread-like front end that the adult threads into the lining of the caecum and colon, and a thicker rear end; the male’s tail is coiled. Females lay barrel-shaped eggs with a plug at each end, which leave the body in the faeces before they are infective.
In warm, moist soil each egg develops an infective larva over several weeks. A person swallows embryonated eggs on unwashed hands, vegetables or in water; the larvae hatch in the small intestine and settle in the large intestine to mature. The cycle is direct, with no intermediate host and no passage through the lungs, which sets it apart from Ascaris and hookworm. Heavy infections in children can cause bloody diarrhoea, anaemia and rectal prolapse, so the model also supports lessons on sanitation and hand-washing.
