What Is the Ancylostoma Life Cycle Model Used For?

Adult Ancylostoma duodenale hold on to the lining of the small intestine with a mouth capsule armed with teeth and suck blood, so heavy infections lead to iron-deficiency anaemia; the male has a broad copulatory bursa at its tail. Eggs pass out in the faeces and, in warm moist soil, hatch into feeding rhabditiform larvae that moult into infective filariform larvae.

These larvae burrow through the skin, usually of bare feet, causing an itchy rash known as ground itch. They travel in the blood to the lungs, break into the air sacs, climb the windpipe and are swallowed, maturing into adults in the small intestine. Unlike Necator americanus, Ancylostoma can also infect when larvae are swallowed. Wearing footwear and using latrines break the cycle, which makes the model useful for public-health teaching as well as zoology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which stages does the model show?
The listing does not name them. Ask JLab for a description and photo of the stages and labels before ordering.

How does Ancylostoma duodenale differ from Necator americanus?
Ancylostoma has teeth in its mouth capsule, while Necator has cutting plates; Ancylostoma can also infect by mouth, and is generally the larger and more blood-hungry of the two.

How does it differ from the Life Cycle of Hook Worm Model?
That model is described as covering the hookworm in general; this one is titled for Ancylostoma duodenale. Compare photos of both before choosing.

Who manufactures this model?
JLab, the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
