What Is the Ascaris Life Cycle Model Used For?
Ascaris is a nematode with a long, unsegmented, cylindrical body; the sexes are separate and the male is smaller, with a curved tail. Its life cycle needs only one host. Adults live in the small intestine, and females lay large numbers of eggs that pass out in the faeces. In warm, moist soil a larva develops inside each fertilised egg over a few weeks, and only these embryonated eggs are infective.
People swallow the eggs with contaminated vegetables, water or hands. The larvae hatch in the small intestine, burrow through its wall and are carried in the blood through the liver and heart to the lungs, where they break into the air sacs and may cause cough and wheezing. They then climb the airways, are swallowed and mature into adults in the intestine. Class 12 biology lists internal bleeding, muscular pain, fever, anaemia and intestinal blockage among the symptoms. Fertilised eggs, with a thick, bumpy, bile-stained shell, are identified in stool; toilets, handwashing, washed vegetables and periodic deworming prevent spread.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Ascaris model show?
The life cycle of Ascaris lumbricoides, as its title states. The stages shown, parts, labels, size and material are not listed, so ask JLab for a description and photo.
Does Ascaris need an intermediate host?
No. Humans are the only host, but the egg must mature in soil before it can infect, which is why Ascaris is called a soil-transmitted helminth.
Which models go well with it?
The Helminth Eggs in Stool of Man Model and the roundworm models linked below.
What are the minimum order and dispatch time?
The minimum order is 10 units, each sold individually. Every model is visually inspected and usually dispatched within 7–10 working days; export transit is extra.
