What Is the Helminth Eggs Model Used For?
Adult worms in the gut release eggs that leave the body in the faeces, so finding them in a stool sample confirms the infection and identifies the worm. Laboratories examine a direct wet mount in saline and iodine and, when eggs are few, concentrate them by formol–ether sedimentation or by flotation in a dense salt solution. Each egg is judged by its size, shape, shell, colour and contents, and by features such as plugs, a lid (operculum) or spines.
Fertilised Ascaris eggs are rounded with a thick, bumpy, bile-stained brown shell, while unfertilised ones are longer and thinner-shelled. Hookworm eggs are oval, thin-shelled and colourless, with a dividing embryo inside. Trichuris (whipworm) eggs are barrel-shaped with a clear plug at each end. Taenia eggs are round, with a thick, radially striated wall around an embryo bearing six hooklets, and the eggs of the two human Taenia species look alike. Enterobius (pinworm) eggs are flattened on one side, and Schistosoma mansoni eggs carry a prominent lateral spine.
