What Is the Taenia Saginata Life Cycle Model Used For?

Taenia saginata is a tapeworm of the class Cestoda whose adult lives in the human small intestine and can grow several metres long. Its scolex carries four suckers but no hooks, which is why it is called the unarmed tapeworm. The body is a chain of proglottids; ripe, egg-filled segments break away and leave the body in the faeces, and they can also crawl out on their own.

Cattle are the intermediate host. They swallow eggs on contaminated pasture, the oncospheres hatch, bore through the gut wall and travel in the blood to the muscles, where they develop into cysticerci (Cysticercus bovis). People are infected by eating raw or undercooked beef containing these cysticerci, each of which grows into an adult worm. Thorough cooking, meat inspection and safe disposal of human faeces break the cycle.
