What Is the Plasma Proteins and Lipoprotein Model Used For?
Plasma proteins are made mostly in the liver. Albumin, the most plentiful, holds water in the bloodstream by colloid osmotic pressure and carries fatty acids, bilirubin, hormones and many drugs. Globulins include transport proteins and the gamma globulins, or antibodies, made by plasma cells. Fibrinogen is turned into fibrin when blood clots, which is why serum — the fluid left after clotting — lacks it. In the laboratory these proteins are separated by electrophoresis.
Fats do not dissolve in plasma, so they travel inside lipoproteins: a core of triglycerides and cholesterol esters wrapped in phospholipids, free cholesterol and apolipoproteins. Classed by density, chylomicrons carry dietary fat from the intestine, VLDL carries triglyceride made in the liver, LDL delivers cholesterol to tissues, and HDL returns excess cholesterol to the liver — the reason a lipid profile reports LDL and HDL separately.
