What Is the Brain Laceration Model Used For?
A laceration of the brain is a tear in the brain tissue in which the delicate pia-arachnoid covering is also ruptured; in a contusion the brain is bruised but that covering stays intact. Lacerations follow penetrating injuries — missiles, sharp weapons or fragments of a depressed skull fracture — or severe blunt injury in which the brain is thrown against the inside of the skull. Damage may lie under the point of impact (coup) or on the opposite side (contrecoup); when the back of the head strikes the ground in a fall, the frontal and temporal lobes are typically hurt.
Teachers use the model to discuss these mechanisms and the injuries that often accompany them: skull fractures, extradural, subdural and subarachnoid haemorrhage, and brain swelling. It suits forensic medicine and pathology classes in medical colleges, as well as nursing and neuroscience courses that cover head injury.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a laceration and a contusion of the brain?
In a laceration the brain tissue and its pia-arachnoid covering are torn; in a contusion the tissue is bruised but the covering is intact. Both can occur together.
What is a contrecoup injury?
Damage on the side of the brain opposite the blow, caused as the moving head stops suddenly, typical of falls onto the back of the head.
Who manufactures the model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
OEM Manufacturer
JLab is the trading name of Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of anatomy teaching models and biology lab equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and located on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. The model is produced in JLab’s own works, not sourced from a trader, so colleges, dealers and importers buy direct from the maker and each unit is inspected before dispatch. The company is registered under CIN U29309HR2017PTC069123 and holds MSME Udyam registration UDYAM-HR-01-0003849 (manufacturing enterprise). JLab exports worldwide and ships to buyers in every region — for example New Zealand in Oceania, Sudan in North Africa, Benin in West Africa, Panama in Central America and the Caribbean, and Afghanistan in South Asia.
