What Is the Familial Polyposis Model Used For?

Familial adenomatous polyposis is caused by a faulty APC gene and is inherited in a dominant pattern, so each child of an affected parent has a one-in-two chance of carrying it. From the teenage years, hundreds to thousands of small adenomatous polyps develop over the lining of the colon and rectum. Each polyp can slowly turn malignant, and with so many present, bowel cancer becomes almost certain by middle age unless the colon is removed in time.

That makes the condition a clear example of two ideas taught in pathology and genetics: the adenoma-to-carcinoma sequence and the value of screening relatives early. Families at risk are offered regular colonoscopy from adolescence and preventive surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is familial polyposis of the large intestine?
An inherited condition, also called familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), in which very large numbers of polyps grow in the colon and rectum and carry a high risk of cancer.

How is it inherited?
Dominantly, through a fault in the APC gene: one altered copy from a parent is enough.

How does it differ from the Colon Cancer and Polyp Model?
By name, this model covers the inherited condition with many polyps, while the other covers a colon polyp and colon cancer.

Who manufactures it?
JLab (Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.

JLab, formally Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd, is a manufacturer of pathology teaching models and laboratory equipment in India, incorporated in 2017 and based on Hargolal Road, Ambala, Haryana. It makes this model in its own works instead of buying it from a trader, so universities, dealers and importers buy straight from the maker, with each unit inspected before dispatch.
