What Is the Strongyloides Life Cycle Model Used For?

Strongyloides stercoralis is taught alongside hookworm because both enter the body as filariform larvae through the skin, usually of bare feet on contaminated soil. The larvae travel in the blood to the lungs, move up the airways, are swallowed and settle in the small intestine. Only females live there, embedded in the mucosa; they produce eggs without mating, and the eggs hatch inside the gut wall.

Two features make the cycle worth a model of its own. Rhabditiform larvae, not eggs, leave the body in the stool, and in warm soil they either become infective directly or grow into free-living males and females that breed outside any host. Some larvae also become infective while still in the intestine and re-enter through the gut wall or the skin around the anus. This autoinfection lets an infection persist for many years and, in people on corticosteroids or with weakened immunity, can turn into life-threatening hyperinfection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which stages does the model show?
The listing names the life cycle but not the stages, labels or size. Ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.

How is Strongyloides different from hookworm?
Hookworm passes eggs in the stool, while Strongyloides usually passes larvae. Strongyloides also has a free-living generation in soil and can re-infect its own host, so an untreated infection may last for decades; hookworm cannot multiply inside the body.

Who manufactures this model?
Jain Laboratory Instruments Pvt Ltd (JLab), at its own works in Ambala, Haryana, India.
