What Is the Pox Virus Pathogenesis Model Used For?
Poxviruses (family Poxviridae) are unusually large animal viruses: mostly brick-shaped, enveloped DNA viruses that, unusually for DNA viruses, replicate in the cytoplasm of the host cell, where they form inclusion bodies such as the Guarnieri bodies of variola and vaccinia. The family includes variola (smallpox), vaccinia (used as the smallpox vaccine), mpox and molluscum contagiosum, while orf belongs to a related genus.
In smallpox the virus entered through the respiratory tract, multiplied in local lymph nodes and spread in the blood to the spleen, liver and bone marrow, then reached the skin and mucous membranes in a second wave of viraemia. The rash passed from macules and papules through vesicles and pustules to crusts that left pitted scars; lesions in one area were all at the same stage and were densest on the face and limbs. Smallpox has been eradicated through vaccination, but the same steps are used to teach mpox and other poxvirus infections.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the model show?
The listing gives the topic only, not the stages, labels or size. Ask JLab for a description and photo before ordering.
How was a smallpox rash told apart from chickenpox?
Smallpox lesions were deep, at the same stage in any one area and densest on the face and limbs. Chickenpox, caused by a herpesvirus, gives superficial lesions that appear in crops at different stages and are densest on the trunk.
