What Is the Schistosoma Life Cycle Model Used For?

Schistosomes are unusual flukes: the sexes are separate, and the slender female lives in a groove along the male’s body, the gynaecophoric canal. The pairs live in veins — around the intestine for Schistosoma mansoni and S. japonicum, and around the bladder for S. haematobium — where the female lays spined eggs. Many eggs work through the wall of the gut or bladder and leave in the faeces or urine; those trapped in tissues cause the inflammation and scarring of the disease.

In fresh water each egg releases a ciliated miracidium, which must find a suitable snail. Inside the snail it multiplies as sporocysts, and thousands of fork-tailed cercariae later swim out. They penetrate human skin during bathing, washing or farm work, lose their tails, pass through the lungs and mature in the veins of the liver before the pairs move to their final site. Following the cycle shows students why sanitation, safe water and snail control all cut transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Schistosoma species does the model cover?
The listing does not name them, nor the stages, labels or size. Ask JLab for a description and photo; the three species most often taught are S. haematobium, S. mansoni and S. japonicum.

How do the eggs of the main species differ?
S. haematobium eggs carry a terminal spine and pass in urine; S. mansoni eggs have a large lateral spine and pass in faeces; S. japonicum eggs are rounder, with only a small lateral knob.

Who manufactures this model?
